Construction started in 1718
by architect [Georg Johann] Mattarnovy
and completed in 1727 by architect Kiaveri.
After a fire of 1747
the museum was rebuilt
by architect Chevakinsky 1755-1758."
Peter the Great (Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov (1672-1725), who founded St. Petersburg in 1703, pursued a policy of Westernization and growth of his Russian empire, and this museum was one of his first projects.
